Our History and Facility

Article: Dothan Brace Shop’s 50 Years of Evolution

Dothan Brace Shop was the vision of Jim Bottoms and son Bobby Bottoms. Both were active in the growing medical community and envisioned the need for a brace shop. They began to search for an orthotist to support the growing orthopedic need of the community. Tommy Hamil, C.O. was recruited and the three formed a corporation and opened the doors of Dothan Brace Shop on Main Street in Dothan, Alabama in August 1967. Tommy Hamil went to work and the facility began to grow. He soon hired his wife, Betty Hamil and the facility began a steady growth.

Realizing the need for prosthetic services, a contractual arrangement was secured with Smitherman’s Inc. of Birmingham to provide prosthetic devices and mobility equipment. Moody Smitherman, C.P.O., along with sons M.L.Smitherman, C.P.O. and Willis Smitherman, C.P.O. began serving the community in 1972 through scheduled clinic visits. Willis Smitherman, C.P.O., joined the Dothan Brace Shop team in 1992 by acquiring the interest of the Bottoms and began a partnership with Tommy Hamil in the Spring of 1992. Willis moved his family from Birmingham to Dothan in October 1992. Shortly thereafter, Tommy Hamil, C.O., passed away, leaving his company stock to Betty Hamil.

Assuming the role as President in November 1992, Willis Smitherman led the Dothan Brace Shop with rapid growth by offering a full range of orthotic, prosthetic and mobility equipment. The growth necessitated the need of a larger building leading to the construction of a new building designed with retail space, patient rooms, manufacturing/production area, cast room, and a full garage housing the mobility shop. Dothan Brace Shop moved into the new fully accessible 6500 square foot facility, located at 1240 East Main Street, Dothan, Alabama in September 1995.

Dothan Brace Shop started the orthotic, prosthetic and mobility equipment evolution in Dothan, Alabama and continues to house an exclusive array of service offerings for the Wiregrass community. The Dothan Brace Shop is proud to have relationships with both Dothan hospitals, other surrounding hospitals, many physicians, Children’s Rehab Services, State of Alabama Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Veteran’s Administration, Campus, Tricare, SAIL, a state homebound client services agency, many insurance companies, managed care groups and other allied healthcare providers. Dothan Brace Shop was granted Facility License Number One.

January 2007, Willis Smitherman became the sole owner of Dothan Brace Shop and strategically began a thorough look at Dothan Brace Shop.
